A Visit to Bannerghatta National Park

We went on a picnic to Bannerghatta National Park on Sunday the 4th of May. We started at 7.30 am and reached the park by 8.15 am as it is a distance of just about 20 kms from our house. The park opens only at 9.00 am and so does the counter for the Safari tickets. There are many Safaris displayed on the board and the Grand Safari seemed the most attractive of the lot; the tickets are priced at Rs.125/- for adults and Rs.65/- for children below 12 years on the weekends and holidays. The prices are lower on working days. We had carried brunch, snacks, juice and plenty of water as the heat was quite terrible even early in the morning. Later, we found this was not necessary as a lovely resort hotel has opened there in Feb 2008.

As we had reached early we were the first in the queue and were able to get on to the first trip of the Grand Safari. Unfortunately we left out camera behind and were forced to take photographs with my husband’s mobile camera, so I apologise in advance for the poor quality of the photographs. Lacking a zoom lens, one has to literally search for the animals in some of the pictures!

You can see the Safari vehicle in the background; there were
two more buses behind us.

You need to look carefully to catch the lion here!..............

So also here..........

This one is trying to scratch an itch.

Obeying an age old instinct....

The Safari lasted for 70 minutes and we were held spellbound by the majesty of these animals. One of the tigers came on to the road and held us up for a good 5 minutes but we were unable to get pictures of this lovely scene.

The Safari is a Plastic free zone and all tourists were provided with papercovers in which to transfer any snacks they carried so that there would be no littering. Inspite of this precaution, I found plastic bags in one or two places. Sadly, Indians seem to take special pleasure in breaking rules to create havoc in the environment.

After the Safari, we had brunch and washed it down with fruit juice or tender coconut. Later we went around the zoo but it was no fun to look at caged animals after the experience of the Safari. All in all, a wonderful trip. The kids (my son and his friend) really enjoyed it. I would recommend that all Bangaloreans and even outsiders make this trip. It was not very tiring as an early start ensured that we were back home by 2.00 pm, escaping the worst of the heat.
